The candidate is expected to carry out the research project 'Transgressions: On the genesis, extent and consequences of illegitimate violence in the Spanish Carlist Wars of the 19th century' (project head: Prof. Birgit Aschmann). The postdoctoral project is part of the DFG research group 'Military Cultures of Violence - lllegitimate Military Violence from the Early Modern Period to the Second World War' (spokesperson: Prof. Sönke Neitzel, Potsdam). The research group has existed since 2022; a second phase has been approved for the years 2025-2028. Researchers from the University of Potsdam, Humboldt University of Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Göttingen and the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History (ZZF) are involved in the research group. The Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces (ZMSBw) is a cooperation partner. The postdoctoral project is based at the Humboldt University in Berlin at the Chair of 19th Century European History.

 

In terms of content, it is concerned with the examination of practices of excessive violence and their perception on the lberian Peninsula in the context of the Spanish Carlist Wars of the 19th century. As these wars were ideologically charged, their progression was also followed closely outside Spain. In addition to the practices and discourses an excessive violence, the project is also interested in the international connections of the warring parties to Germany, France, Portugal and England, as well as how the public there perceived the conflicts.

 

Job description:

  • scientific service in research in the project `Transgressions: On the genesis, extent and consequences of illegitimate violence in the Spanish Carlist Wars of the 19th century`
  • participation in the work of the DFG research group 'Military Cultures of Violence - lllegitimate Military Violence from the Early Modern Period to the Second World War'
  • collaboration with the Chair of 19th Century European History

 

Requirements:

  • completed scientific university education and doctoral degree, preferably in history or with a clear historical focus
  • a very good dissertation that addresses the main topics of the research project
  • very good knowledge of Spanish and willingness to familiarise yourself with Catalan
  • familiarity with the Spanish archival landscape
  • ability to work in a team and show initiative
  • applicants, who are English or Spanish native speakers should be open to acquiring a basic knowledge of German
