The Faculty of Language, Literature and Humanities of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin seeks to appoint a

Professor for “Comparative Literature and Film Studies/Digital Media”

(W3, “full professor”)

in the Department of Languages and Literature by 01.10.2026.

he professorship is supposed to represent broadly the specifications named in the denomination with reference to modern German literature in a systematic and/or historical orientation. At least one of the two focal points of the denomination must therefore already have a relevant track record in teaching and/or research.

Applicants should support the growing importance of film and media analysis in school context, particularly in the area of teacher training for secondary school types (ISG) at Bachelor's and Master's level, by providing a disciplinary foundation. We expect the development and expansion of comparative media perspectives in relation to school-relevant areas of competence in German literature. A willingness to engage in this field is a prerequisite. It is desirable that the professorship should also contribute to the teaching programs for primary school teaching.

Teaching and research areas of the professorship can include film and media theory and/or history, e.g. in concrete connection to literary film adaptations, in the comparison between literary texts and visual aesthetics, in the examination of new forms of digital writing and publishing as well as in other sub-areas of intermediality and transmediality in historical and systematic perspective. A proven theoretical competence in media-specific analysis is desirable. Applicants should participate in ongoing collaborative and externally funded projects and apply for new collaborative and externally funded projects. Cooperation – also on an international level – is expected, as is active involvement in academic self-administration.

The applicant must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the ’Berliner Hochschulgesetz’.

The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is seeking to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching, and specifically encourages qualified female scholars to apply. International applicants are welcome. Severely disabled applicants with equivalent qualifications will be given preferential consideration. People with an immigration history are specifically encouraged to apply.
