We are seeking one highly motivated PhD candidate (m/f/d) to join our research team at the Berlin School of Economics, particularly at Humboldt University (HU), the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT), and the Hertie School. These projects are part of the Research Group “Labour Market Transformation: Scarcity, Mismatch, and Policy,” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Labor scarcity and skill mismatch are central to current labor market discussions. Rapid transformations such as digitalization, globalization, the green transition, and demographic change are reshaping the nature of work, presenting significant challenges to the economy. Specific topics include the effects of labor market tightness on labor market outcomes, internal labor markets and firm organization, the effect of minimum wages on firm behavior, the effect of pension reforms, the labor market integration of immigrants, and the role of host societies in shaping the behavior of minority groups.
Job description:
- scientific services in research in the projects at the interface of labour market economics, public policy, political economy and migration
- participation in the structured doctoral programme of the Berlin School of Economics (BSoE) in a comprehensive training and supervision programme and an international, attractive working environment on a campus with modern state-of-the-art infrastructure
- access to international research networks
- support for participation in conferences and research collaborations
- tasks for personal scientific qualification (doctorate)
Requirements:
- completed scientific university education in economics or a related discipline with a solid knowledge of applied economics
- excellent knowledge of microeconometrics and experience with empirical microdata
- excellent command of written and spoken English (at least C1)
- experience in Stata, R and/or Python is desirable
- strong analytical skills
- a strong interest in independently conducting rigorous research on new questions
- a keen interest in working with large datasets and studying labor market dynamics and topics like gender, migration, race, and demographic change is essential
- strong teamwork and collaboration skills
- independent thinking, critical reasoning, and a strong work ethic
