The Collaborative Research Centre 1412 Register: Language Users’ Knowledge of Situational-Functional Variation investigates since 2020 aspects of the register knowledge of the speakers of a language. Competent speakers can adapt their linguistic behavior on every level in response to the current situation in order to increase communicative efficiency. The CRC investigates and models register knowledge on the basis of a range of phenomena on all linguistic levels in diverse languages, language stages and language acquisition phases.

 

Task description:

  • scientific research services in in the area of register acquisition, CRC 1412 "Register", project C05 "Young adults’ specialized register knowledge: Modeling late linguistic development in L1 and L2" (The project investigates the L1 and L2 acquisition of academic registers in young adults. It advances an empirically based fine-grained model of the time course and the factors affecting the development of specialised linguistic repertoires and register flexibility in higher education.   • Design, implementation and evaluation of quantitative and qualitative studies based on the project's own ReFlexAE corpus
  • Collaborative research tasks
  • Presentation and publication of project results
  • tasks for personal scientific qualification (doctorate)

 

Requirements:

  • completed master’s degree or equivalent at a German university or an equivalent international university, either in linguistics, corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, or a closely related discipline
  • experience in corpus linguistic research
  • very good knowledge of the languages German (C1) and English (C1)
  • Ability to work independently, teamwork and communication skills
  • Desirable skills:
  • a genuine interest in the study of register acquisition and multilingual development
  • ideally, experience in empirical research methods and statistics skills
