CRC 1512 "lntervening Arts"

The CRC 1512 "lntervening Arts" is interested in the enabling and activating faculties of the arts and investigates their potential to create social relations and instigate political discord by establishing artistic processes of perception and practices. Today, perhaps more than ever, the arts claim to have an impact on society. The CRC assembles arts-related disciplines with philosophy, history, sociology, and cultural anthropology.

The CRC 1512 is located at the Freie Universität Berlin and cooperates with the HumboldtUniversität zu Berlin, the Universität der Künste Berlin, the Europa-Universität Viadrina, Frankfurt (Oder) and the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg.

Sub-Project C02 „Futurity as Intervention - Ethnographies of future-making

practices"

Laborbereich Künste und Wissenschaften – Sub-Project: Reflexion, Promotionsprojekt „Interventionskonflikte“:

The cultural-anthropological sub-project examines relations in the interaction of arts, sciences and public spheres as a network of relationships that is characterized by interdependencies and conflicts. Projects at the interface between the arts, sciences and the public not only work in one direction, but also exert a multidirectional influence on each other and are part of larger socio-political contexts. These influences are seldom equal, but powerful, asymmetrical and, in certain constellations, also violent (Clifford 1997, Boast 2011, Sternfeld 2013). For example, the economic conditions and institutional requirements of artistic and scientific work are conflictual. In the scientific context, it is sometimes difficult due to institutional framework conditions to promote artistic research and scientific qualification work according to the same standards and to take the freelance field of artists into account. However, their work is essential for scientific exhibitions and many other forms of science-related cooperation. The resulting tensions between the arts, sciences and the public are evident in different places and can also be seen in the laboratory formats and collaborations of the CRC itself. The doctoral project examines the outlined tension and is interested in the diverse forms of communicative, performative, political negotiation that transcend disciplinary, but also regional and national borders.
