The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Faculty of Life Sciences – Department of Psychology/Prof. Rolfs) invites applications for a Postdoc position for the Cluster of Excellence “Science of Intelligence”, project: “Internal and external visual information sampling using eye-movements and overt attention in dynamic scenes”.

What are the principles of intelligence, shared by all forms of intelligence, no matter whether artificial or biological, whether robot, computer program, human, or animal? And how can we apply these principles to create intelligent technology?

Answering these questions - in an ethically responsible way - is the central scientific objective of the new Cluster of Excellence Science of Intelligence (https://www.scioi.de), where researchers from a large number of analytic and synthetic disciplines - artificial intelligence, machine learning, control, robotics, computer vision, behavioural biology, psychology, educational science, neuroscience, and philosophy - join forces to create a multi-disciplinary research program across universities and research institutes in Berlin. Interdisciplinary research projects have been defined (https://www.scienceofintelligence.de/research/projects), which combine analytic and synthetic research and which address key aspects of individual, social, and collective intelligence.

This project builds on our previous work in the cluster (Object-level scene descriptions and attention in visual search, https://www.scienceofintelligence.de/re-search/projects) in which we aimed at a better under-standing of how humans explore the visual environment by moving their eyes to locations of interest and by
extracting visual information during periods of fixation. To be of higher relevance for understanding intelligent behavior, we investigate ecologically valid settings, which entails task-dependent information extraction from dynamic real-world scenes, complementing the reduced settings typically considered in psychology. Combining eye tracking experiments, computational modelling, and validation of the results in computer vision applications, we will investigate the relationship between task, gaze behavior, and scene memorization, with an additional focus on mechanisms and functional consequences underlying inter-individual differences in human visual sampling strategies.

Job description:

  • scientific services in research within the Cluster Science of Intelligence to the topic "Visual Information Sampling“, in particular design of the experimental paradigms and conducting the behavioral studies and eye-tracking experiments planned in this project

Requirements:

  • university degree and a PhD degree in Cognitive Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, or related fields
  • demonstrated interest in eye movement control and vision science / strong experimental research experience in the field of human visual perception
  • expertise in psychophysics, eye tracking, or motion tracking
  • very good programming skills in Matlab/Python/C/R for experimental control, data analysis and modeling
  • willingness to work closely with colleagues in the field of machine learning and computer vision
  • experience with the recording and analysis of eye-tracking data and experience in computational modelling is an advantage
  • a very good command of the English language
